Results of relationship skills course for 16yrs plus students

During 2012 two different year groups of 60-70 year 12 students (16-17 yrs olds)in a secondary school in South Devon UK were given 4 one hour sessions on a weekly basis covering basic relationship skills. The teaching was delivered by trained volunteers working in pairs. The students were in groups of no more than 15.

The lesson contents and plans were drawn from material that has has been developed and delivered locally to adults in the community over the last few years.

Results of the last cohort taught (Dec 2011)are seen below. Additional tables are included combining the results from both cohorts. According to the volunteer clincal psychologist the results were very impressive given the content and length of the course. Feed back from the two year groups of students showed very similar results. The first cohort was delivered by 3 pairs of volunteers. The second cohort was delivered by 16 volunteers of whom only 3 had delivered the material previously. The majority of volunteers had never taught relationships skills nor taught in schools. Their age varied from 24 to 73 year. The volunteers were given one group training day, and 3 hours of individual training. There was on going support during the course as and when required by the team leader. The feed back from the volunteers (with only limited training) showed that ordinary people , who are prepared to share their life experiences with the students, can deliver a well structured course effectively.

Please note: No comments on apology and stop signs because the evaluation was completed at the end of the lesson when these two topics were delivered.
